Bitcoin and blockchain: understanding the foundations of crypto.

Bitcoin isn't just a currency. It's a protocol, a network, and a revolution in how value can be transferred without intermediaries. To understand crypto, you first need to understand Bitcoin and blockchain.

What is a blockchain?

A blockchain is a distributed digital ledger. Think of a shared accounting book maintained by thousands of computers. Every time a transaction occurs, it's recorded. Once recorded, it can never be erased or modified.

What makes blockchain revolutionary is that it eliminates the need for trust. You don't need to trust a bank to validate a transaction. The network does it, transparently and verifiably.

3 essential properties of a blockchain

Decentralized, No single entity controls the network. Thousands of nodes worldwide maintain identical copies.

Transparent, All transactions are publicly visible. Anyone can verify the complete history.

Immutable, Once a transaction is confirmed and written to a block, it cannot be modified or deleted.

How does Bitcoin work?

Bitcoin is the first concrete application of blockchain. Created in 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto (a pseudonym), it's a peer-to-peer electronic payment system without a central authority.

Mining and Proof of Work

Miners solve complex mathematical problems to validate transactions. In return, they receive a Bitcoin reward. This "Proof of Work" secures the network by making cheating extremely expensive.

The Halving

Every ~4 years, the mining reward is cut in half. The last halving occurred in April 2024, reducing the reward to 3.125 BTC per block. This ensures all 21 million bitcoins won't be created until approximately 2140.

What Bitcoin is not

FAQ

How does Bitcoin work?
Bitcoin is a decentralized network where transactions are verified by miners and recorded on a public blockchain. There's no central bank. The protocol limits total supply to 21 million bitcoins.
What is the halving?
The halving occurs every ~4 years and cuts the mining reward in half. This reduces the rate of new bitcoin creation, reinforcing scarcity.
